DIRECTOR, SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MARINE INSTITUTE
The Director of the Southern California Marine Institute (SCMI) is responsible for implementing policies and procedures established by the SCMI Board of Directors and has overall responsibility for the management of SCMI facilities, budget, people, and programs. The Director coordinates the educational, research, and contract programs for SCMI member institutions, and coordinates and facilitates interdisciplinary marine education and research activities in harbor and coastal waters. This includes overseeing the operations and activities of research vessels that are used by classes and research programs in biology, geology, and ocean engineering. In addition, the Director serves as an educational and research liaison between regions, states, and nations.
Identifies and pursues opportunities for external grants and contracts. Promotes SCMI as a center of excellence worthy of community support. In cooperation with the SCMI Board of Directors, will oversee and participate in the design and implementation of the new facility at City Dock, Port of Los Angeles.
The Director plays a strong leadership role in SCMI and is an active force in leading the Institute, advancing its operations, pursuing goals, and developing present and future programs.
Working knowledge of the management of a marine facility and the implementation of policies and procedures preferred. Proven ability to manage personnel and budgets. Ability to coordinate educational, research, and contract programs. Demonstrated ability to identify and pursue external grants and contracts preferred. Success with community outreach preferred. Understanding and appreciation of the SCMI vision and current challenges.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assists in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Earned doctorate in a field of science appropriate to the operation of the Institute, (e.g. Biological Sciences, Geological Science, Marine Biology, or Oceanography). Minimum of five years of related experience.
Renewable, full-time, three-year appointment with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
Salary: $7,636 to $9,583 per month.
The duties of this position will include participation in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, the selected candidate will be required to file Conflict of Interest Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest on an annual basis, complete ethics training within 6 months of appointment, and attend this training every other year thereafter.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION: Letter of application; curriculum vitae; a statement of research interests and administrative experience; and three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with qualifications. Employment is contingent upon proof of the legal right to work in the United States and documentation of terminal degree must be provided prior to employment. The appointment is not final until proof is provided.
